US-funded infrastructure projects highlight envoy’s first visit to Kosrae

KOLONIA, Pohnpei (Embassy of the United States of America) — From March 10 to 13, U.S. Ambassador Peter A. Prahar made his inaugural trip to Kosrae.


Prahar toured Kosrae International Airport’s newly constructed Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting Station.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program financed the six-million-dollar building that meets the strictest international standards.

The U.S. also purchased two fire-fighting vehicles, accessories, auxiliary and radio equipment, tools, and three years of maintenance services.

The cost of the vehicles and maintenance services total an additional 1.5 million dollars.

The ambassador also toured two elementary school buildings under construction in Utwe and Lelu municipalities.

The facilities have received 2.1 million dollars so far in Infrastructure Sector Grants under the Compact of Free Association.

Prahar paid a courtesy call on Kosrae Gov. Robert J. Weilbacher.

Their discussion focused on Compact-funded infrastructure projects, U.S. financing for a state water system, Kosrae’s private business sector, and the state’s plans to assist citizens with the current El Niño phenomenon.

Prahar also met with Kosrae State Legislative Speaker Lyndon Jackson, Supreme Court Chief Justice Aliksa Aliksa, and FSM Sens. Claude H. Phillip and Paliknoa K. Welly.

Following his meetings with the political leadership, the ambassador called on Kosrae State Attorney General J.D. Lee and toured the Kosrae  public safety and jail facilities.

Prahar also met with Kosrae State Utility Authority general manager Fred Skilling and Department of Education Director Paul Hadik.

Prahar  met with educators from the College of Micronesia -Kosrae campus, USDA-RD personnel, U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers, and American citizens residing in Kosrae.

Throughout all his meetings, Prahar outlined three goals for his tenure as ambassador to the FSM: nurture the unique and profound FSM-U.S. relationship, uphold the U.S. guarantee of the FSM’s security, and assist the FSM achieve its development goals.
