The library’s executive director, John O. Gonzales, said he is expecting the participants to put into practice what they have learned.
The training was sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Pacific Resources for Education and Learning.
Conducting the training were PREL library and information literacy initiatives director Jane Barnwell and research specialist Mathew Bellhouse-King.
The workshop discussed topics regarding the image of librarians, school libraries, the Public School System’s vision, leadership in libraries and read-aloud programs.
Gonzales said the modules used during the workshop were designed to meet the specific needs of the CNMI.
“Each module has different topics for each community, and this is a very good chance for the professional development of our librarians so they can better serve the community and the reading public in their respective areas,” Gonzales said.
“We are glad to take advantage of every opportunity we can find for development,” he added.
Participants in the training were program coordinators, directors, homework assistants, library aides and assistants from elementary and high schools on Saipan, Tinian and Rota, the Northern Marianas College library, the CNMI Archives, Law Revision Commission @Hillblom Law Library, and the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library.
Gonzales said PREL initiated similar training sessions for librarians in Palau, Yap, and Kosrae before coming to the CNMI.
The next training sessions will be held on Guam, Pohnpei, Chuuk and the Marshall Islands.
