Wiseman imposes $1,500 cash bail on man in assault case

Diego Pangelinan Kaipat, 41, has another pending case for a similar offense, according to Assistant Attorney General Rebecca Warfield.

Wiseman set the preliminary hearing for Dec. 15 at 9 a.m., and the arraignment for Dec. 22, at 9 a.m.

In an affidavit submitted to the court, Detective Katherine Manglona stated that the Department of Public Safety received a call regarding a disturbance and possible involvement of a gun at 3:37 a.m. on Dec. 6 in Chalan Kanoa by the beach area.

One of the responding police officers was approached by an individual who pointed to the defendant’s residence.

The individual said the defendant tried to shoot him with a spear gun.

The police officer said as he and his companions were nearing the  house, they heard a female voice shouting in Carolinian language.

The officers were already at the front door when Kaipat rushed out. When he saw the police officers, he went back into the house.

The police officers said Kaipat entered the bathroom and locked himself.

The police officers added that they heard shouting and later saw the defendant running outside, shouting that he was going to kill someone and then himself.

The defendant ran to the side of another house as the police officers chased him.

When the defendant reached the house, he stopped and extended both his hands to a police officer, then suddenly pulled his hands away, pushed the police officer and ran to the backyard.

The defendant picked up a rock and threw it at the police officers who sought cover.

The officers eventually subdued the defendant and secured him on handcuffs after they sprayed pepper mace on him.
