Zhao Xiaolan, 35, was accused by her former husband, Ting Jian Tang, also known as Kevin, owner of Kevin’s Department Store in Chalan Kanoa, of stealing $23,000.
Judge Kenneth L. Govendo retained the $25,000 bail order he earlier imposed on Zhao’s arrest order.
She was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections after the hearing.
Assistant Attorney General Shelli Neal represented the government, while Assistant Public Defender Richard Miller was appointed as Zhao’s counsel.
Drug Enforcement Task Force Detective Steven A. Castro said Ting Jian Tang reported on June 20, 2011 that he lost $23,300 from his safety deposit box in his room.
He said he discovered the theft after he opened his safety deposit box to get some cash to pay his contractor.
He told police that his undetermined Chinese currency was not missing, and the U.S. dollars were only missing.
He said he knew from the surveillance camera that his former wife, the defendant, came to the store and was seen entering the hallway, leading to his room.
He further told police his room was not “messed up,” and that only Zhao knew the whereabouts of the keys and how to open the safety deposit box in his room.
Upon review of the surveillance video, police confirmed that Zhao arrived at Kevin’s Department store on June 17, at about 2 p.m.
Further investigation showed that she moved back to China after her divorce with Ting Jian Tang on March 21, 2011.
Ting Jian Tang told police Zhao has a history of taking money from him without his consent and that he has never reported it to authorities.
