World War II survivor and former Rep. Stanley T. Torres with his son, Department of Corrections Commissioner  Anthony C. Torres, Sen. Celina Babauta, her husband Special Assistant for Homeland Security and Emergency Management Franklin Babauta, Rep. Vincent S. Aldan and a community member at American Memorial Park during the Veterans Day ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11, 2024. Torres was three years old when the U.S. invaded Saipan in 1944. With his parents and other family members, he hid in a cave while the Battle of Saipan raged. After the U.S. secured control of the island, Torres, his family and other local residents were held at the civilian internment camp in Chalan Kanoa for at least two years.
