Yap lawmakers look into cell phone service in atoll

The committee has invited FSM Telecom and the state government to discuss the disruption in cell phone service in Ulithi, which has been disconnected for almost a year now.

FSM Telecom has lost its cell phone connectivity in Ulithi Atoll since about a year ago due to deteriorating parts of telecommunication equipment caused by salt spray but it has never completely lost its Internet connectivity.

FSM Telecom said after experiencing network problems in the islands a year ago, a team was dispatched to the area to take down the equipment for repair.

The damaged part was sent to the corporate office in Pohnpei for repair, and has been sitting there for a long time.

But FSM Telecom reported that the problem had been fixed and was already expecting the part from Pohnpei on board the Continental flight to Yap.

FSM Telecom likewise said the telecommunication equipment will be flown out for installation on Falalop Island on any available flight going out to the atoll one of these days.

That equipment would require the removal of seats so that it could fit into the plane.

FSM Telecom will send a team to do the installation as well as check other components that have been installed ever since.
