FSM Vice President Alik Alik flew over from Pohnpei to attend the ceremony.
According to the secretary of DTC&I, Francis Itimai, this project is “another milestone accomplishment of over a million dollars for this administration to turn over to (one of the FSM states) — Yap.”
In addition to celebrating the handing over the new ARFF facility, the DTC&I will be handing over some ARFF vehicles, a medical trailer, and other firefighting equipment to Yap.
The ceremony was held at the Yap International Airport.
Funding for this project comes under the Airport Improvement Project, which is going on in all four FSM states.
The funding sources are the FAA, the U.S. Department of the Interior and Yap state.
The project was implemented by the DTC&I with assistance from Lyon Associates Inc. of Hawaii, and GMP Hawaii Inc. acting as a consultant for design and construction management.
While in Yap, Alik will also meet with Gov. Sebastian Anefal to discuss some important matters leading up to the State-National Leadership Conference on March 18-19 in Pohnpei.
