Younis sworn in as NMC regent

“My goal is to help make NMC the gem of the Pacific in the education industry — a role model for other colleges in the region,” Younis said in an interview after she was sworn-in by acting Gov. Eloy S. Inos.

Younis, the co-publisher of this newspaper, studied education in the U.S.

In the 1970s, she was one of the pioneer teachers of the Sister Remedios Early Childhood Development Center, a cooperative school for children three to five years old founded in 1952 by nuns, among them the late Sr. Remedio Palacios Castro.

Younis later became a classroom teacher at Marianas High School and served as director of Northern Marianas Academy before becoming vice principal of Hopwood Junior High School.

In the 1990s, Younis became the acting principal of Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary and principal of William S. Reyes Elementary.

In 2005, she was named head of the Head Start program.

During her tenure as Head Start director, Younis upgraded the status of the program, enabling it to better serve economically challenged pre-school children.

She later became the executive director of NMI Humanities Council before retiring a few years ago.

As the newest member of the board of regents, the governing body of NMC, Younis said “the important thing is to really work with the other board members.”

NMC President Carmen Fernandez said she welcomes Younis’s new role. “She’s highly qualified. We look forward to her contributions,” she told the Variety.
