Youth Congress election on Sept. 15

There is a bill that will reapportion the seats of Youth Congress election districts and reschedule the election for the third Monday of October, but it remains pending in the Senate and no immediate action is expected to take place within a week’s time.

Registration started some two weeks ago at private schools and at public schools on Monday.

Today is the deadline for registration and filing of candidacies, Reyes said.

Since the first Youth Congress election in 1998, voter turnout has been low and has never exceeded 2,000.

Last year, there were not enough candidates for the Youth Congress’ 23 seats.

The bill introduced by Rep. Ralph DLG. Torres, R-Saipan, will move the election date to allow more students to register.

The bill, which was based on the proposal of the youth senators themselves, will reduce the number of some precinct seats and increase those allotted for high schools with a student population of 20 or more.

The bill will also reduce the seats of the Northern Marianas College from three to one.
