This year’s event will be led by Jocelyn Atalig, the Board of Education student representative from Rota, and the panel officers, he said.
The event will be held on May 27 and is the brainchild of Education Commissioner Rita Sablan, he added.
It will start at 6 p.m. and end at 10 p.m. at the Hard Rock Café, the major sponsor.
Tickets are sold at $10 each.
“Teachers, parents and other members of the community are encouraged to help our youth make this event a reality by sponsoring or by buying tickets,” Barcinas said.
He said youth leaders from Rota, Tinian and Saipan have been planning PSS Rocks and other community events so they can share their concerns with the community.
“They are going to be our future leaders and if we want them to learn skills and become service-oriented by volunteering to perform cleanups and other community events, then we need to start now,” Barcinas said.
The event is also a fundraiser and the proceeds will be used for the youth events next school year, he added,
Other events that Youth Advisory Panel members have been involved in this school year aside from their own school-level obligations include the Parent Summit, the Youth Summit, the Anti-Bullying Campaign and the Marianas March Against Cancer.
The panel member were also involved in the all-school performing arts event that will take place on May 28 after PSS Rocks.
Barcinas said panel members are also active in the Support our Troops program which encourages students and schools to wear and display yellow ribbons to show appreciation for the nation’s armed forces.
The leaders involved with the panel are Student Council officers, school club members and JROTC officers.
The panel advises PSS on issues that affect students in school communities.
It serves as the students’ communication link to the government, businesses and the entire community on a variety of subjects.
Barcinas said the panel identifies and advocates youth issues and carry out events and activities that are important to students.
“The magnitude of time that the panel members have spent to plan all the events and activities this year are tremendous and the commissioner of education, Dr. Rita A. Sablan, should be commended for her active role in helping and guiding the members to become successful,” he added.
