Man pleads guilty to burglary and theft

Gulf Melus pled guilty to one of burglary and one count of grand larceny. In exchange for his plea. Elizabeth Avore, Assistant Attorney General, saod that she dismissed the charges of one count of conspiracy to commit grand larceny and one count of conspiracy to commit burglary.

Melus admitted that in the early morning of May 31, 2009, he and co-defendant Arnold Milong broke into the Public Health Office in Meyuns and stole several items, including four computer speakers.

Under the plea agreement, he will be sentenced to three years imprisonment, all suspended up to six months to be served at the discretion of the Court. The maximum sentence for grand larceny is five years imprisonment and $1,000 fine; and the maximum sentence for burglary is 10 years imprisonment.

He verified that he was of sober when he entered into the plea agreement and that he had previously reviewed it with his counsel, Mr. Mark Doran. He was also aware of the trial rights that were waived when pleading guilty.

According to the agreement, Melus shall pay restitution in the amount of $287.48 within three months of his release from jail. He must also stay away from the Ministry of Health offices, as well as obey all laws of the Republic, orders of the court and directives of the Probation Office. Any violation of the conditions may result in the immediate imposition of defendant’s sentence.

Sentencing is set on Feb. 10.
