Maruir returns from PNG trip

Mariur said that the meeting was the member countries combined efforts to find ways to resolve the situation the Government of Fiji have been facing for the past four years.

Mariur said during his short visit the Vice President had the opportunity to meet with various leaders such as the Hon. Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, Hon. Toke Tufukia Talagi, Niue Premier, Hon. Edward Nipake Natapei, Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands among other Heads of State to discuss the necessary steps to be taken in addressing and leading the Fiji Government back to democracy.  Mariur said the final draft of the communiqué is yet to be released but the consensus was that the best approach in solving the problem is not to suspend or expel Fiji from the forum.“As a result, it came to an agreement by the forum leaders that the suspension or expulsion of Fiji from the forum will not be the best approach in solving the problem but could only make things worse,” Mariur said. Final draft of the communiqué is yet to be released by the Forum which is said to benefit the Government of Fiji and the Pacific as a whole. The Vice President was accompanied by Mr. Victorio Uherbelau, Special Assistant to the President on Legal matters, and Mr. Ngerikl Baules, Bureau of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Service Officer.
