Mobil gas prices up 7 cents

MOBIL Oil Marianas on Tuesday raised its fuel prices by 7 cents. Shell is expected to follow suit.

Mobil’s regular gasoline price rose to $4.92 a gallon from $4.85 a gallon; the premium gas price is now $5.37 a gallon from $5.30 a gallon; and diesel now costs $5.18 a gallon from $5.11 a gallon.

Community cleanup volunteer Max Aguon said he is very grateful to Mobil’s Ed Flores for providing him $100 of gas each month for one year.

Aguon picks up trash around the island even on weekdays. On Tuesday, he said, he drove his truck to Marpi to pick up trash there before heading to Sugar Dock, which he regularly maintains.

He said he uses a lot of gas for his volunteer work which is why he is very grateful for the assistance provided by business community members.

On Tuesday, the New York Times reported that “Americans are spending a dollar more for a gallon of gasoline than they were a year ago. Natural gas prices have shot up more than 150 percent over the same time, threatening to raise prices of food, chemicals, plastic goods and heat this winter.”

According to the NYT, “The energy system is suddenly in crisis around the world as the cost of oil, natural gas and coal has climbed rapidly in recent months. In China, Britain and elsewhere, fuel shortages and panic buying have led to blackouts and long lines at filling stations.”

“The situation in the United States is not quite as dire,” the NYT added, “but oil and gasoline prices are high enough that President Biden has been calling on foreign producers to crank up supply. He is doing so as he simultaneously pushes Congress to address climate change by moving the country away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy and electric cars.”
