MORE than 30 volunteers picked up litter at four beach sites on Saturday morning, June 3, as part of the Division of Coastal Resources Management’s Ocean Cleanup event.
Island Keepers CNMI gathered trash at the Garapan Fishing Base.
One of the group’s volunteers, a child, “went into the bush and picked up trash. After we finished picking up the trash, we all drank soda and ate ice cream as rewards,” Island Keepers stated in a Facebook post.
The group collected cans, fishing lines and plastic wastes.
At Coral Ocean Point, volunteers were able to fill 15 bags with garbage which included swimsuits, golf balls, metal scraps, plastic wastes, cans and other trash.
Other volunteers cleaned up Wing Beach in Marpi and Marine Beach in Kagman.
Volunteers with Bwiibwii’s Professional Lawn Care Services picked up the trash at Marine Beach.
“We had some help from our Bwiibwii Pro. LCS babies,” Bwiibwii Profesional Lawn Care Services said, adding that they are especially thankful to volunteers Ben Jr. and Bentley.
DCRM provided cleaning supplies, trash hauling and disposal as well as water jugs during the cleanup.
In a statement, Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality Director Zabrina S. Cruz expressed her gratitude to DCRM and the cleanup volunteers.
She thanked “all those who came to lend a helping hand, whether it be by picking up, providing supplies, hauling, etc. Every act counts. A quote from one of our proclamation keynote speakers: ‘you are the agent of change.’ ”
The total amount of trash collected will be announced on a later date, Cruz said.
