Ngatpang chiefs file complaint vs state government

In a letter to Special Prosecutor Michael Copeland, the Ngaimis said the state government is ignoring the mandates of the state constitution:

• There are only eight members of the state legislature which should have nine.• The legislature has failed to fill the vacancy.• Its members have passed a law increasing their salaries while reducing the compensation of the members of the Ngaimis.• The state remains without a governor and the speaker of the legislature, who serves as acting governor, does not meet constitutional requirements. The members of the Ngaimis said they are hoping for an immediate resolution of their concerns, saying the “people of Ngatpang [deserve] a caring government that should serve them first and well.”Some members of the state legislature said the alleged violations have been raised before and they will not comment until they have consulted with their counsel. One member, who declined to be identify, said “the allegations are ludicrous and a waste of time.”The member went on to say, “The Ngatpang state government is doing its best to serve the people, but it is difficult to be of service when the people are being misled.”
