President Johnson Toribiong before leaving for Vanuatu last week said that the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands and including Nauru have agreed to fully endorse the launch of the Green Energy Micronesia Initiative (GEM).
FSM president Emmanuel Mori says that the islands are especially vulnerable to energy price fluctuations and its cost affecting other government services.
energy needs command more of their resources than their national budgets can afford.
Toribiong, says their goals include achieving 20 percent of power generation through renewable energy by 2020 and general improved energy efficiency.
The four nations are also requesting technical support from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community through the SPC North Pacific Regional Office based in Pohnpei.
The leaders are requesting for help in establishing a roadmap in support of the planned establishment of a Micronesia Energy Association which will compliment the GEM.
In Palau, the green energy initiative has started since 2009 with the government distributing energy efficient bulbs in exchange of ordinary lightbulbs.
The president added that several government buildings have solar panels such at the Capitol, hospital and the causeways.
Palau, like other Pacific island nations doesn’t have its own source of fossil fuel.
The Micronesia leaders due to the threat of climate change said that the solution is to invest into renewable energy as a source.
