“First we want to see if the youth issue are still relevant today. Second, we are looking for the possibility if it needs to reactivate the National Palau Youth Body that will support and implement this kind of activities,”Joe Aitaro , chairman of the Organizing Committee said in an interview.
Aitaro said that the Youth Convention was organized to determine the importance of the youth and to encourage them to actively participate in the development of the nation.
He said that a bulk of the national resources are dedicated to the youth, like teenage pregnancy and drug abuse program, but there were only ignored.
The aim of this convention is to involve the youth with this programs and to make them a good citizen.
Also tackled in the convention is the conduct of a National Parent Symposium.
The Ministry of Education proposed a strong parent involvement in the school. Like monitoring and assessing their children’s activities.
The Ministry of Justice also proposed to have a camp or rehabilitation center for the youth detained for criminal offenses.
Aitaro said this will help the youth to think twice from doing the same offense rather than having them hold placards bearing their criminal violations and putting them in jail.
The Youth Convention was attended by all high schools and students of Palau Community College as well as the 16 states, excluding the Ngaraard, Ngatpang and Hatohobei.
