Lucas Spesungel who has been away and living in Oregon for over 30 years is in the country to attend his relative’s funeral. During a visit to his alma matter, Peleliu Elementary School, he learned that the children need a covered walkway from the school to the gym.
According to Haruo Esang, President of the Eldebechel era Ngarablod — the non-government organization that was given the $150,000 grant by the Turkish government to build the gym — Spesungel immediately offered to provide the needed funds to complete the project.
“Lucas never forgot his roots, and we need to have more people from Peleliu to follow the footsteps of Lucas to support worthwhile projects for our children and Peleliu State in general,” Esang added.
During a dinner reception held at the Longshoremen Restaurant on Tuesday, the Ngarablod Association awarded a Certificate of Appreciation to Spesungel for his commitment to the welfare of the children of Peleliu and its people.
