PSS conducts Construction Boot Camp for students

(PSS) —  The PSS-CTE Construction Boot Camp Summer Program was created to provide participating students with real-life experience in the construction industry.

The boot camp is another pioneering initiative rolled out by the Public School System’s Career and Technical Education Program.

“Based on our survey and study, there is a boom in construction work in the CNMI,” CTE Program Director Dr. Jessica Taylor said.

Eight students have signed up for the Construction Boot Camp which will run from July 6 to 30, 2021.

These students have already completed a rigorous two-day mandatory certification training conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration which certified them on June 30, 2021.

“Since we started our CTE program (in school-year 2009-2010), this is the biggest cohort that we have for our construction program — this is very exciting,” Dr. Taylor said.

The participating students were provided with necessary personal protective equipment such as construction hardhats, vest and construction ear plugs, among other items.

Starting on July 6, the students have been assigned to the Department of Public Works and its various divisions such as highway, building code, architecture, administration and solid waste.

Dr. Taylor said after the summer boot camp, they are hoping to see the students enroll in the construction course offered by the Northern Marianas Technical Institute.
