Remengesau will make history as the only president who will end his term and not opt to retire from politics and instead run for the Senate, if he does not withdraw from the race. Remengesau said that it was his supporters who circulated the petition to encourage him to run for office. “I am aware that my constituent are actively getting nominating petition and I appreciate their continuing trust,” the president said.
Earlier he said in politics “never say never.” He said that he still need time to consult his family before he will
make formal his declaration or decline for the bid. It is however a requirement for the submitted nominating petitions to be signed by the candidate. It is not however required for the candidate to appear personally before the Election Commission to file the nominating petition.
There are 13 seats up for grabs in the Senate. Remengesau served as senator, and two terms as vice president and two terms as president. Avery Midas , Election officer said that at least 300 signed
Remengesau’s nominating petition. Nominating petitions for Senate requires at least 50 signatures.
Presidential hopeful Joshua Koshiba said that the president cannot claim that he had no choice when his supporters filed the nominating petition for him to run in the Senate. If you(the candidate) do not sign the nominating petition then it is not official,” Koshiba said.
