HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A man allegedly was robbed after being hit in the head with a metal ashtray.
On Sunday, 18-year-old AJ Soulik was charged with robbery in connection to a complaint made on Nov. 12.
According to a magistrate’s complaint filed Sunday in the Superior Court of Guam, officers with the Guam Police Department responded to a complaint made at Salas Dormitory in Tamuning. When police arrived, Guam Fire Department medics were tending to the male victim, who suffered a head injury “when being robbed by three male individuals.”
The victim reported that about 11:30 p.m., he was having drinks with a friend in the parking lot when he noticed a male shaking the gate to get the victim’s attention, the magistrate’s complaint stated. The male, who was wearing a white shirt and black pants, asked if the victim had a cigarette, to which the victim responded he did not smoke.
Court documents state the victim became suspicious as he noticed two other males were present while he continued to talk to the male at the gate.
“While conversing with the same male individual, one of the other two males came into the parking lot from the road and struck him on the side of the head with a metal ashtray on a stand. The victim fell to the ground and someone grabbed his tote bag that he had been holding on his arm and fled. By the time the victim arose from the ground, all three of the male individuals had fled the area,” the complaint stated.
The victim reported to police his bag had cash, ID cards, an ATM card and a cellphone. Officers noted the back of the victim’s had was swollen. He was taken to the hospital for further treatment. According to the complaint, police later found a three-legged metal ashtray near the dormitory.
Surveillance footage further showed the victim appearing to stare at someone and there being three males, who appeared to be teens, present.
The male in the white shirt who was speaking to the victim in the surveillance footage appeared to have thrown the ashtray at the victim, while the other two males allegedly punched the victim. The male in the white shirt also appeared to have kicked the back of the victim’s head as the victim was trying to get up, the complaint stated.
One of the other males was seen picking up items from the ground before all three ran away, the complaint added.
Police were later informed that Soulik was one of the males who punched the victim in the face. Officers were able to identify Soulik themselves from photographs, the complaint stated.
Soulik was charged with robbery as a second-degree felony and theft by complicity, assault and reckless conduct as misdemeanors. The two other males alleged to be involved in the incident were not charged as Soulik’s co-defendants.
Soulik was committed to the Department of Corrections on $3,000 cash bail and faces a maximum of 11 years in prison if found guilty of the charges, according to the Office of the Attorney General.
