Rota voter registration drive set for July 8

THE Commonwealth Election Commission will hold a voter registration on Rota  Friday, July 8.

CEC Executive Director Kayla S. Igitol on Thursday said the drive will be conducted from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rota Mayor’s Office.

The 2022 general election is set for Nov. 8, Tuesday.

As of Thursday, July 7, the Commonwealth had 18,383 registered voters, according to the election commission.

To be eligible to vote, an individual must be at least 18 years old on or before election day, is a domicile of the Commonwealth, has resided in the CNMI for 120 days prior to election day, is not serving a sentence for a felony conviction, has not been declared by a court to be judicially insane, and is either a citizen or national of the U.S. as defined in the CNMI Constitution.

Previously registered voters who have failed to vote in the 2018 and 2020 general elections must re-register to be eligible to vote in the 2022 general election.

For first-time voters, they must provide a valid U.S. passport or birth certificate.

Request for absentee ballots will commence on Aug. 25.

The last day for voters to register for the general election will be on Sept. 9.

CEC Executive Director Igitol encouraged voters who have changed their election district to update their voter registration on or before Sept. 9.

The first day of early voting for the Northern Islands will commence on Sept. 23, while Saipan, Tinian, and Rota will have to wait until Nov. 1 to vote early.

The deadline for absentee voters to submit applications to vote electronically or by mail will be on Oct. 14.

Polling places will be designated on Nov. 1.

The last day of early voting will be on Nov. 7.

For candidates, the last day to establish residency requirements and the first day for the submission  of nominating petition and candidacy will be on July 11.

The last day of submission of nomination petitions and candidacy documents will be on Aug. 10.

The last day for the election commission’s action on nominating petitions and candidacy documents will be on Sept. 23.

All campaign materials must be removed from public places by Nov. 23.

Campaign financial statements must be submitted by Dec. 28.

Newly elected officials will take office on Jan. 9, 2023.
