SUMMER Youth Employment Program participants will receive their first paychecks this week, Youth Affairs Office Special Assistant Ali Ogo said in an interview on Saturday.
“We are approaching Week 3. It’s a six-week program and will run from July 6 to August 19,” he added.
“This is exciting for the participants. The program will give them an opportunity to have some money in their pocket for the summer.”
The 2022 Governor’s Summer Youth Employment Program is providing opportunities to youth ages 14 to 17 to build positive life skills, expand their career and technical experience, engage in career-oriented opportunities, and experience financial responsibility by participating in employment opportunities with local government agencies.
Youth Affairs, which is under the Office of the Governor, is implementing the program.
Ogo said the youth employment program is an opportunity for participants to gain professional skills, and experience how to actually be an employee, and learn what to expect when transitioning to employment.
Asked how many are participating in the program, Ogo said, “Just a little over 400.”
He said as far as he knows, no one has stopped or quit for some reason or another. “Everything’s been good; it’s turning out really well,” he added. “It’s our first big program. We’re having little bumps here and there, but we were able to get over it.”
Ogo thanked Gov. Ralph DLG Torres for launching the program.
“He wants the youth to be active during summer prior to going back to school, so a big shout-out to Governor Torres for providing the youth with workforce experience.”
Ogo said the governor is also “looking into technical training for the older age bracket who are transitioning into employment.”
