Suspect released after being charged with strangling, threatening woman

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — Chasten James Santos Calvo, 24, stands accused of strangling and pointing a gun at a woman he was romantically involved with.

The incident occurred Wednesday when a verbal argument between the two escalated, with Calvo allegedly becoming physical, according to a magistrate’s complaint.

Calvo “placed his hands around her throat, blocking her airway,” resulting in the victim not being able to breathe, the complaint stated.

Calvo released his grip and allegedly grabbed the woman by her wrists and “dragged her to the ground” before pulling her by the hair.

The complaint states that Calvo then pointed a handgun – which he owns legally – to the woman’s temple, “stating he would kill her.”

After the alleged assault, Calvo left the residence leaving the woman “emotionally disturbed and shaken,” according to a report from the Guam Police Department.

Police officers said the woman told them she wanted to leave the residence in fear that Calvo would return and shoot her.

Police said the woman sustained superficial injuries, abrasions to both her knees and slight bruising to her neck, wrists, legs and shoulder.

The complaint states that Calvo self-surrendered to GPD the following day. He was accompanied by an off-duty civilian police officer, who noted that the handgun was present in the vehicle they drove to the precinct.

Calvo was taken into custody and charged in the Superior Court of Guam with strangulation, aggravated assault with the special allegation of use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony, terrorizing, family violence and reckless conduct.

He was released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.
