The Offices of Homeland Security and Civil Defense in Guam have issued an advisory regarding an approaching tropical disturbance expected to impact the Marianas. As of 7:30 a.m., the system was positioned approximately 200 miles south-southeast of Satawal and about 610 miles south-southeast of Guam, near 5 degrees north latitude and 149 degrees east longitude. Its current movement is westward at a speed of approximately 6 mph.
Based on the current forecast, the disturbance identified as 97W is likely to track towards the Marianas, potentially passing very near or over certain parts of Guam or the CNMI early next week. The weather conditions in the Marianas are expected to remain clear throughout the weekend, but inclement weather, including heavy rainfall, is anticipated to commence as early as Monday and persist until Wednesday.
Significant uncertainty still exists regarding the exact track and intensity of the system as it approaches the Marianas. For Guam specifically, the system is expected to approach between Monday and Wednesday, with the possibility of tropical storm to low-end typhoon force impacts. Damaging to destructive winds and heavy rainfall are possible, along with an increasing potential for hazardous sea conditions.
In light of this information, the community is advised to take the following preparedness actions leading up to the weekend:
Residents living in flood-prone areas should take necessary measures to minimize flooding by clearing drainage areas and unblocking storm drains.
Clear loose debris in your surroundings and securely store items such as tents and canopies that could be easily carried by heavy winds before the arrival of inclement weather.
Stay updated with the latest information as the system’s track or intensity may change, and advisories may be issued.
Locate or assemble emergency preparedness kits for your household.
Safeguard important documents, including birth certificates, tax papers, and insurance documents, by keeping copies in a water-proof bag.
Ensure that your vehicles are fueled and have an adequate supply of fuel for your generators.
Be prepared to take appropriate action if the use of shutters is recommended in the coming days.
It is crucial for residents to heed these advisories and make necessary preparations in order to mitigate potential risks and ensure their safety. Regular monitoring of updates from local authorities is strongly encouraged.
