Typhoon Mawar relief drive concludes

THE relief drive for Guam led by the Department of Corrections concluded Monday afternoon.

Corrections Commissioner Anthony Torres said, “The second 40’ container will be leaving for the port at 4 p.m. and will be sailing for Guam tomorrow [Tuesday].”

He said Piti Mayor Jesse Alig will receive the container. 

Torres said a large pallet of relief items for Rota would be transported at 4 p.m. Monday on a C-130 plane. 

He expressed his appreciation to the community for donating relief items for the typhoon victims on Guam and Rota.

“I want to express my heartfelt thank you from the bottom of my heart to the strong and resilient people of our community for their generous donations for this mission. Thank you to the governor and lt. governor, the CNMI Legislature, the Saipan Mayor’s Office, KKMP 92.1 FM Radio, the American President Lines, and to my dedicated and amazing team from the Northern Mariana Islands Department of Corrections,” Torres said.

“Words can’t describe the outpouring of gratitude we have all been experiencing in our interactions with the community members contributing to this Typhoon Mawar relief drive for our people on Rota and Guam.  Dångkulu na si Yu’us ma’åse’ and Gilisow. Na’i Ånimu Marianas,” he added.

The first container containing relief goods was shipped on Thursday last week.

The relief drive, which was held in collaboration with the Offices of the Governor and Lt. Governor, the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Fire & Emergency Medical Services, the CNMI Legislature and the Saipan Mayor’s Office,  started on June 2 in the multi-purpose center parking lot in Susupe.

A container of relief goods will be shipped to Guam on Tuesday, June 13.
