Yap Legislature holds 23rd session day

During the adoption of the journal, the Legislature deferred action on the 22nd Session Day Journal to the next Session Day.

The only communication that the Legislature received from the governor during the session today was introduced after it was assigned to the Resources, Education and Development Committee.

The Legislature received one department communication in which it was also assigned. Dept. Comm. 8-10 is a copy of a letter from James Sarmog regarding discussions on the Airport Master Plan, Final Draft Yap International Airport.

One bill and one resolution were introduced.

Bill 8-41 will amend Title 11 of the Yap State Code by adding a new Section 1302, to specify sales of tobacco, by amending Section 1302, and by renumbering Section 1303 as new Section 1304, and for other purposes. The bill was introduced by Chairman Jesse Raglmar-Subolmar and assigned to the Government, Health and Welfare Committee.

Resolution 8-39 confirms Vincent Figir as director of the Department of Public Works and Transportation. This resolution was introduced by Floor Leader Sabino Sauchomal by request and assigned to the Resources, Education and Development Committee.

The Legislature did not take any action on Bill 8-21, which will amend Section 141 of Title 8 of the Yap State Code, the State Public Service System Act, to exempt the staff and employees of the Office of the Public Auditor from the system, and for other purposes.

The decision to defer action on the bill followed a period of discussion that came after an amendment was made on the floor to change the current language of the measure.

Prior to the adjournment of the session, Sen. Jerry Fagolimul made a brief announcement regarding a Catholic event that will take place at the community center at 10 a.m. on Sunday Sept. 4, 2011.

Fagolimul said the Catholic faith in Yap will hold a Mass service celebration on that day to commemorate several events that happened in the state since 1886.

The Catholic faith gathering will commemorate the following events: 125 years of Christianity in Yap from the first baptism in 1886 up to 2011; the ordination of the first Jesuit Yapese priest, the late Fr. Apollo Thal and his death anniversary remembrance; and the opening of the first Catholic high school in Yap.
