11 participate in week 2 of NMA Talent ID Camp

ELEVEN athletes —  seven boys and four girls —  participated in week 2 of the Northern Marianas Athletics Talent Identification Camp on Saturday at the track & field of the Oleai Sports Complex.

Week 2 focused on sprints and hurdles with NMA Development Officer Elias Rangamar explaining the five different phases of the sprint events.

The 11 participants included a former medalist who was working himself back into form, seven athletes already in the program, and three new one who want to run faster.

The participants worked on warm-up protocols such as sprint drills, block work, and acceleration. They also learned what it takes to be a hurdler, Rangamar said.

When asked if the participants have the potential to represent the  CNMI in future regional or international competitions, Rangamar said, “Yes. Every athlete that showed up has potential but it’s a process which takes years to complete.”

He thanked the athletes who “gave up their Saturday morning” so they could participate in the training camp.

This Saturday, they will focus on throws, Rangamar said, adding that he anticipates more participants.
