BBJ Fitness Corner | Eating with a purpose

CONSISTENCY is key to reaching an individual’s fitness goal whether it is to lose weight or gain muscle. But food intake is also important, said Jerry Diaz, a National Academy of Sports Medicine certified personal trainer.

Managing food intake is crucial to an athlete, he said, adding that “under-fueling” can result in poor performance and fatigue.

He said an individual must be aware of how much energy (food) is taken in and is utilized (burned) throughout the day.

Cravings are one the biggest challenges for an individual, he added.

But one must not avoid food, Diaz said. “Instead, we focus on the amount being taken in. We must  look at food as energy.”

As a personal trainer, Diaz said his job is to provide his clients opportunities to be successful.

He teaches them how habitual practice can lead to weight loss and lean muscle gain.

He explains  why food is  energy that can help them lose weight or build muscle.

Throughout the training period, “I serve as their guide who help them stay focused on their fitness goals.”
