Managaha Island is a tiny island in the lagoon of Saipan, the capitol island of the Northern Marianas. Managaha Island was selected #1 snorkeling spot at 2008’s Marine Diving Fair in Japan.
Over 100 participants entered the 1.5 km race at its inauguration.
The 2nd Annual International Open Water Flipper Tournament—a unique race allows swimmers to use fins, snorkels and wet suits or life jackets.
There will be several age divisions: 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 and up. Those age 18 and under will be entered in the Junior Division.
Ferries depart promptly at 4:45 a.m. the morning of the race, carrying participants, officials, and spectators to Managaha Island. The race starts at 6:30 a.m., with an island style awards ceremony at 9 a.m. on Managaha.
The event is sponsored by Marianas Visitors Authority (MVA) and the Community Sports Center Foundation of Japan.
“This is a cooperative effort, with MVA producing the tournament and the foundation marketing it to their members in Japan,” said MVA Managing Director Perry Tenorio. “Last year the event was very successful. Community Sports Center Foundation is a great organization for us to partner with; we are happy to have so many Japanese enthusiasts visit our islands and enjoy our pristine waters.
The cost is $25.00 for Northern Marianas residents. The deadline to register with the Marianas Visitors Authority is Friday, June 18, 2010, from 4-6 p.m. during the orientation at the American Memorial Park Amphitheater on Saipan. Participants must be in good health with snorkeling or diving experience. Mask, snorkel, fins, and wet suit or life jacket are required.
