Bad weather puts glitch on inaugural Christmas tourney

The kick-off ceremony and the inaugural games were cancelled yesterday due to the bad weather. The rain did not stop pouring down which kept the basketball court wet all night.

The Garapan Rollers Club will continue to host the four-day competition. Their head coach, Joe Diaz, confirmed the participation of six teams, yesterday, in the 15 and under division, while five teams will compete in the 12 and under age group.

The Torchbearers and Hopwood Junior High School will be joining the Rollers A, Rollers B, Rollers C, and Rollers D squads in the 15 and under division.

For the 12 and under division, the Rollers A, Rollers B, Rollers C, and Rollers D teams along with the Torchbearers are greatly anticipated to showcase their talents while a squad from the Kagman Village is still pending.

Teams from Dandan Village and William S. Reyes Elementary School showed interest in joining the 15 and under division.

The tournament will have two co-ed categories in the 12 and under division as well as the 15 and under division. The games are scheduled to occur every night from 5 pm to 8 pm.

Each team is permitted to have up to 12 players. The 12 and under games will have two 16 minute periods with a break provided in between the halves, while the 15 and under division will have two 20 minutes periods with a break provided in between as well.

The tournament will incorporate either a round robin or bracket-style format for the game, it will all depend on how many teams show up for the tourney.

Equipment and drinks will be provided for the teams, but everyone is encouraged to bring their own and to keep hydrated at all times throughout the game to steer clear away from a trip to the Commonwealth Health Center.

Trophies will be awarded to the Top 2 teams in each division.

The Sportsmanship Award is all up for grabs along with the Most Valuable Player Awards and other prizes will also be made available such as basketballs and sports accessories.

The MVP’s will be recognized during the awards ceremony. For more information please contact Joe Diaz at 670-788-2163.
