Basketball Facts and Principles

Naismith pursued theological studies at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, but was also interested in physical education. He moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, answering the local need for an indoor game. He worked out the principles and rules of a new ballgame later called basketball. The very first basketball game took place on December 21, 1891.

The Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame was later created in Springfield. Inside the Hall Of Fame, collections, exhibits, and souvenir items commemorate the most prominent players, coaches, and leaders of the game.

Here are a few things to remember:

-National Federation of State High School Associations: The governing body of sports activities including basketball through state bodies; also a member of USA Basketball.

-National Wheelchair Basketball Association: A USA-based organization of handicapped athletes that play basketball in wheelchairs.

-Personal Contact: Body contact between players (although basketball is defined as a non-contact game, personal contacts occur during play).

-Personal Foul: A player’s personal offense is called as such to distinguish it from technical fouls. Personal fouls involve contact with an opponent.

-Penetrator: A player entering a crowded area under the basket; also a player that passes to a teammate in a crowded area under the basket.
