Community, high school Rocball leagues rage on

The Magics played their second game against team Hit It last Friday. The Magics were able to “juice out” the Hit Its in three sets by outscoring their foes and winning the final set to close down the game.

Rocball rules of play defines a winner of a game by which team has the “moxy” to outscore their opponents in total points and win the last set of the game. In Rocball, a team cannot win a game in a losing set, and all high school games are played in three sets. The community league players compete in four sets with the same rules of engagement.

Rocball isn’t volleyball. Rocball games have predetermined sets of plays and both teams play to those rules. In volleyball, a game is determined by which team wins two out of three or three out of five games. A Rocball game is divided by quarters – similar to basketball, but without a clock.

Overtime sets in Rocball can end in sudden death, because it is the first team to score ten points with the serve or score a goal; whichever comes first. All the points scored in regular sets become meaningless. It doesn’t matter which team won the most sets or what the total points either team scored in the regular sets.

In the third high school game played last week, the Hit Its “juiced out” team Yo Face in three sets 46 to 37. Hit It’s Isaiah Laniyo was the game’s heavy hitter with one xunk, one kee, and one goal for seven points.

In high school team standings, the Magic have taken the lead with five wins and one loss. Teams Kingz and Yo’Face are tied in second place with two wins and three losses. The Hit Its are in last place with two wins and four losses.

In the community league, four teams have been scrimmaging to familiarize players with Rocball rules. The veteran players of the Soul Rebels and Sounders have been mixing up with other first time players. Their practice and preseason games started last Saturday and will continue on Monday and Tuesday during the Marianas High School gymnasium’s Safe Haven program.
