Sonics defeat Mobil, 78-76

After losing their perfect record to the Smart Cagers, team Sonics roared back against team Mobil during the second game of the 2nd Season QQ Car Rental Basketball League, 78-76.

With the bitter taste of revenge in their mouths the Sonics survived a rough encounter against team Mobil even though point guard Leo Galarse was injured in the last critical seconds of the game.

Juan Maratita’s seven points during the first quarter allowed team Mobil to grab the driver’s seat of the game leaving the Sonics’ behind, 26-17.

Stolen possessions and several turn-overs gave the Sonics a chance for a come-back. Lerio Pagarao, stealthy waiting under his home basket, received a quick five feet pass followed by key-shots for six points while teammate Jao Wong knocked another eight points down to nab the lead, 43-35.

Pagarao nailed six more points during the third quarter. Point guard Leo Galarse and Pedro Lizama contributed his five points and four points respectively, 64-58.

Team Mobil fought back during the last period of the game. Last season’s Most Valuable Player, Jun Estolas, garnered a whopping 13 point mark.

At the last 59 seconds the Sonics’ Leo Galarse (9) was injured while guarding Mobil’s Marvin Rabauliman behind the three-point line (7).

“I was guarding Marvin. When he was about to take that shot, he faked and took that step back and that’s when I lost my footing and sprained my ankle,” said Leo Galarse in an interview with the Marianas variety.

But Bryan Chan’s three-pointer pair saved the Sonics during the pivotal quarter capping the game with a two-point edge, 78-76, for a great come-back.

When asked what the key to the team’s success was last Friday night head coach Omar Ajoste said, “Defense was the key. We had several turn-overs during the first quarter. But they [Mobil] also had many during the second quarter and that’s what saved us.”

“The last minute proved to be pivotal because many things can happen in a minute. Even if you’re a good player there must be five competitors on the arena,” Ajoste added.

On that note Ajoste also emphasized that teamwork was very vital for the survival of any team playing basketball.

On the other hand, Sonics’ Lerio Pagarao could not be reached for any comment as to why he exited the arena in the last minute of the quarter.
