DFS tennis tourney kicks off

Angelo and Raphael Jones had a good start after beating Aaron Lee and Seiya Eda, 6-1, 6-3 in the boys 18-and-under doubles category last Saturday. Carl D. and Chris Cajigan defeated Bob Kim and Chris Cepeda, 6-0, 6-0. They — along with Jake Lee and Daniel Park — will follow a best-of-three, round robin format.

In the girls 18U singles division, Marianas High School student Melody Johnson downed Yuri Song to advance to the semifinals. Jodel Fernandez defeated Amy Arenovski, 6-3, 6-3.

Johnson also dominated the girls 15U division with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tammy Ackerman. Negahr Rastguiy triumphed, 6-1, 6-1 against Emily Jones while Mikayla Lopez outran Jazmin Rayphand, 6-0, 6-1. Adele Hudkins downed Alina Ishikawa to reach the semifinals.

The boys 10U singles category, which boasts 15 players, included Steven Goodwin, Steven An, AJ Hudkins, Mondo Taniguchi, James Hourican, Joshua Abragan, and Vincent Tudela in its quarterfinal pool on Saturday.

Luther Lizama scored 6-4, 7-6 to beat Clayton Izuka in the boys 12U singles division. Alex Park defeated James Kim to face Michael Ren.

The DFS tournament is the first event of the Northern Marianas Islands Tennis Association’s junior tennis ranking season, and is open only to junior players this year.
