The Lady Dolphins from Marianas High School ruled the dashes, jump events, and throwing stints of the two-day meet that began Friday.
MHS’ Rachel Abrams drew first blood Friday afternoon during the 100m dash posting the best time of 12.71 edging past fellow schoolmates Reylynn Sapong (13.53) and Jeralyn Castillo (14.66).
Abrams then rallied past the longer 200m dash with 28.44 followed by Kagman High School’s Ashley Babauta (32.75) and Tinian High School’s Alonica Anore (37.40).
Liamwar Rangamar was on the north west of the field hurling the discus farther than all competitors in a pool of four finalists at a distance of 24.4 closely tailed by school mate Rita Del Avellano (20.67) and Tinian High School’s Alana Takasi (14.95).
Del Avellano exacted revenge during the Shot-Put finals launching further than anyone else at 8.61 followed by Kagman High School’s Kimberly Agulto (5.95).
Marianas High School also grabbed gold in the 4×100 relay, 4×400 relay, and the high jump category. MHS posted the best time 55.57 during the former, 4:39.91 during the latter and 1.33 during the high jump.
Despite posting a slower time in comparison to the prelims Marianas High School’s Jim Lacsina conquered the 100m dash clocking in at 11:55 in comparison to his first time of 11.70 but it was still enough to beat Ryan Ichihara’s 11.83 who surprisingly placed third after pulling back slightly during the medley.
“At first Ryan was ahead of me a couple seconds after the gun-signal. I caught up to him momentarily and was running side by side with him halfway through the dash,” said Jim Lacsina in an interview with the Marianas Variety.
Lacsina then said he realized that he could runner faster than Ichihara. “I remember smiling and hurried up to the finish line achieving my goal of taking home gold tonight,” Lacsina added.
Lacsina was then seen again showcasing his running talents during the 200m dash against long time runner Beouch Ngirchongor.
Lacsina was behind during the first 100m of the medley race. Lacsina was able to edge past fellow schoolmate Greg Duatin and Tinian High School’s Jae Hoon Shin catching up to Ngirchongor. Lacsina then pushed during the last ten meters of the stretch leaning forward and reaching the finish line by less than a second.
“I can’t believe I beat Beouch. He was a very good runner and very competitive as well. Catching up to him was really hard especially during the last stretch of the race. We were going really fast and my oxygen intake was diminishing making it really hard for my upper body to sway and move. Leaning forward was the best decision I’ve ever made,” said Lacsina.
The Variety learned that Lacsina beat Ngirchongor due to the fact that Lacsina leaned forward passing the line first while the latter remained upright. Lacsina posted 58.53, Ngirchongor clocked in at 58.6, and Greg Duatin clinched bronze with 1:03.49.
The MHS boys grabbed gold medals in the 800m dash, 1500m dash, 3000m dash, 4×400, long jump, high jump, javelin throw, and shot-put throw.
