The Hawks edged the Shuttlers in four doubles and two singles matches, tallying their total sets to 79. The Hawks’ team of Edwin Maratas and Alvin Alvarez defeated Roger Vales and Ariel Mariano in two sets, while Cristy Villaflor crushed Shuttlers’ Merlie Tolentino 21-17 in their second set.
The Shuttlers snatched a three-win streak in their second, third, and fourth games, with Ferdie Arago and Tolentino prevailing against Hawks’ Rey Bulaon and Merlie Savellano. A final victory from Bulaon earned the Hawks their 18th set of the night.
The Hawks also faced the Red Hot Chili Shuttlers in last Friday and Saturday’s matches, winning seven games. Only Andrew Galvez, Gigi Zapanta, and Anna Alvarez survived against the Hawks, pulling 10 sets for the Chili Shuttlers. Their team currently ranks fourth in the league with 34 sets.
Tied in second place are the Pink Dynamites and Yellow Idols, who both jumped to 52 sets this past weekend.
The Dynamites nearly struck a perfect game against team Royale Blues, winning seven out of eight matches last weekend. Blues’ Mario Diola and Vic pounded Jerry Hibi and Rommel Monserat in their mens’ doubles game last Sunday, scoring 21-17 in the first set and 21-18 in the second.
A total of seven teams are competing in the tournament, which take place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Green Bucks rank third overall with 51 sets, while the Royal Blues place fourth with 40 sets.
Playing team Bucks last Sunday were the Yellow Idols, who ruled the night with six wins. The team of Hapi Gabriel and Saul Gargallo won the Idols their final game, following a loss from teammate Cris Hilario.
The Traders Insurance Team Tournament will resume this Friday at 5 p.m., and will continue on Saturday and Sunday.
