HBR Construction won the Alpha Kappa Rho 1st Semi-Open Invitational Basketball League championship on Sunday night by dominating Jacob’s Bakery, 100-68, at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
HBR reigned supreme from start to finish.
In the opening half, HBR quickly established control of the tempo with back-to-back triples from Junie Thongaram and Airson Atan followed by three consecutive buckets by Tony Kim.
It took a while for Jacob’s Bakery to get into rhythm with Emmanuel Bondad scoring 10 points while Dan Fernando and Arjhay Singca provided support. However, they failed to keep up on the defensive end as HBR continued to fire at will with Atan connecting two treys alongside Jose Broncano while JR Galang and Gab Camacho finished strong with three unanswered makes to push the lead to double-digits, 41-31.
The lead only grew further out of reach throughout the second half as HBR continued to outscore Jacob’s Bakery with ease.
Atan remained the biggest threat as he used his craftiness to draw in fouls and contribute points from the free-throw line. With Galang and Jepoy Tabora cleaning up the inside mess with second chance buckets, HBR gained a comfortable 20-point lead.
Although Jacob’s Bakery could not escape the inevitable defeat, it decided to go down fighting, with Bondad, Singca, and Jerome Reyes contributing buckets to soften the impact of the 100-68 defeat at the hands of HBR.
In the battle for third place, JC Marketing slipped past Yuman Construction, 76-73.
