In connection with the celebration of the President’s Day celebration on Monday, 1st of June, the Ministry of Education put up an essay contest to all elementary and high school on the island that had two separate categories. With careful analysis of the contents of each essay written by different students from various elementary and high schools, the 6th grade from Ngardmau State Elementary won the first place on category I and took the overall champion for both class. As President Johnson Toribiong reiterated about Jorella’s essay, “she should be one of my ministers,” as she clearly marked in her beautiful composition to keep the island of Palau clean and fine-looking. She also solicited by mentioning the continued abundant supplies of books to the schools while asking also the president on creating programs to maintain changes for Palau that could improve better living for the near future. As a conclusion of her essay, Jorella asked of using the 3R heroes, reduce, reuse, and recycle to keep Palau gorgeous.
Other winners of the Category I essay writing contest were 5th grade Kederang Tellei of Melekeok Elementary School who grabbed 2nd place whereas a 7th grader from Peleliu Elementary School, Mai Sadao gets third place. With regards to Category II with the topic on, “Should the members of the OEK be paid the same as, more, or less than the members of the President’s cabinet?” was won by Amber Holly Murasko Osima, a sophomore of Palau High School while Korenelia Ibuuch Thomas of Mindszenty High School also a sophomore gets second place.The 2009 President’s Day Essay Writing contest was achieved through the Ministry of Education headed by the minister himself, Masa – Aki Emesiochel who steadily facilitated on the planning and arrangements of the competition.
