Kabiriel dashed through the 4.7-mile course between Pau Pau Beach and the radar station at 35 minutes and 23 seconds, winning first place in the overall and males’ category.
“It feels good,” said Kabiriel, who now owns the fastest record for the radar run. “I’m glad I made the new record in this race. It’s gonna be tough for anyone to break,” said Kabiriel. He liked the uphill portion of the course but disliked going downhill due to knee problems. After a “good wake up call” from the run, he wanted to thank Safety First and Joshua Berger for their support.
Coming in at a time of 36:02, Keum Bai Ji followed Kabiriel in the males’ category. Ben Wood placed third with 38:29.
Local pro triathlete Mieko Carey ruled the women’s division with her time of 38 minutes and 47 seconds, while Mamiko Oshima-Berger placed second at 39:25. 2010 Banzai Half Marathon women’s champion Rebecca Read came in at third place, completing the Pau Pau-radar trail in 42 minutes.
Austin Kosam beat six other participants in the youth category with 42:39, while Joel Tudela came second at 46:26 and Vinnie Inos placed third with 47:42. Other runners included Dennis Chan (49.06), Roland Dowan (55.12), Kevin Jack Kabiriel (57.36), and Koen Kabiriel (57.52).
A total of 31 individuals registered for the event, which was organized by Brad Ruszala with the help of members from the Ayuda Network and Department of Public Health’s Diabetes Prevention and Control Program.
From the numerous sponsors that supported the event, Ruszala ensured that nobody left Pau Pau Beach empty handed. Aside from awards won by top individuals in each category, participants received a free t-shirt and a chance to win raffle prizes last Saturday.
“Everyone seemed happy with the race, and I’d be glad to host another one next year,” said Ruszala.
