THE Man Amigas ended the inaugural NMI Softball Association Women’s League 2024 with a perfect season after routing the Batties in the championship series at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Pangelinan softball field on Saturday.
The Man Amigas kicked off game 1 by trouncing the Batties, 12-2.
In the opening inning, the Batties nearly broke down the Man Amigas’ defenses, but fell short after they were handed three outs with two runners on third and second. The Man Amigas, for their part, succeeded in their attempt to score with Bell Igitol bringing in Bexx Repeki and earning an RBI single to seize the lead, 1-0.
While the Batties remained silent with three consecutive outs given in the top of the second inning, the Man Amigas capitalized with five runs in the bottom half led by Keo Rios, who connected a two-RBI single. Their lead only grew further in the next two innings as three more runs came in with no answer on the opposing end.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Batties, down 0-9, finally broke the silence with two runs scored off errors. But that was the end of their parade as the Man Amigas responded with three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to lock in the victory, 12-2.
Game 2
The Man Amigas unleased a bombardment of runs to bag the title in game 2.
Right from the start, the Man Amigas were locked in, notching seven runs that were highlighted by Keo Rios’ two-RBI single. Their momentum could not be disrupted as they scored in nearly every inning, except in the fourth when they were handed three straight outs.
In the top of the fifth and sixth innings, the Batties managed to slip in two runs, but these were followed by a continuous volley of runs brought in by the Man Amigas with six runs scored in the sixth and eight more in the seventh to seal the deal, 29-2, and win the championship.
Team manager Manny Sablan said the Man Amigas are a force to be reckoned with. “A lot of them have been playing for the Belau Amateur Softball Association league and a majority of them have competed in the fastpitch softball in Majuro for a team that I managed. Plus, the routine of practice has improved their skills so we were able to get the championship,” Sablan said.
“It feels good to win. Honestly, it’s a good experience for the ladies. I’m really hoping for fastpitch to come in so we can really test our women here on island,” Sablan added.
NMI Softball Association President Froilan Camacho said their inaugural season went very well. “We appreciate the teams that came out to compete and showcase their skills. Their performances were unmatched — each team had their own unique way of playing,” he said.
As for the fastpitch softball open tryouts, he said they are expected to begin in January.
The sponsors of the 2024 women’s league are Senate President Edith Deleon Guerrero, Safety First, Pacifica Insurance, Rep. Macolm Omar and Vice Speaker Joel Camacho.
