Mantas rule 1st high school outrigger meet

The Mantas topped their rivals at seven minutes and 9.44 seconds in the boys 1000 meter finals and three minutes and 28.26 seconds in the boys 500m finals.

Kagman High School took second place with 7:21.54 in the boys 1000m event but settled for third at 3:52.52 in the boys 500m event. Marianas High School clocked in at 7:29.75 and 3:33.12 in the 1000m and 500m races, respectively.

Despite SSHS setting the bar this season, these series of practice races will not count towards final rankings yet. High school outrigger canoe races will continue every Saturday for the month of May according to organizer Gilbert Birnbrich.

Under the girls 1000m and 500m finals, SSHS ranked first at 8:31.04 and 3:58.26, respectively. Despite only having an all-girl squad this year, Mount Carmel School bagged second at eight minutes and 58.27 seconds in the 1000m race and four minutes and 10.22 seconds in the 500m event.

The Lady Dolphins trailed the Knights with 9:06.91 (1000m) and 4:12.88 (500m).

Preliminaries under the 1000m and 500m events were held prior to the finals round on Saturday.
