‘Mayor’s Cup’ underway

The cup will feature an array of sports: baseball and softball, basketball, volleyball, outrigger, soccer, golf, fishing derby, and bowling.

Games — headed by the Saipan Mayor’s Office — will stretch out to Tinian, Rota, and Guam. Each island will get a chance to share a “perpetual trophy,” according to organizer Ray Lizama. Baseball and softball events will be headed by Derron Flores. Basketball games may be supported by the Masters Basketball Federation of the Northern Marianas Islands.

“For the rest of the sports, we are looking from help from other organizations,” Flores told variety.

Each event will include divisions from as low as 12-and-under to open and masters (35-and-above, 40A) categories.

Games under basketball and softball/baseball may begin as early as August. Lizama targets the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium as a possible venue, but may utilize the gym at Marianas High school as back-up.

“The Mayor’s Cup will focus on the youth,” added Lizama. “Part of the mayor’s platform is community programs through sports. We’re also planning on coordinating with elementary schools.”
