MARIANAS High School’s varsity team emerged victorious in Friday’s thriller against Saipan Southern High School’s varsity team, 44-42, securing their fourth win in the boys high school division of the PSS-NMIBF Interscholastic Basketball League SY24-25 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
It was a fairly even match from start to finish.
In the opening half, both teams fought for control, but neither was able to get a strong hold.
SSHS V worked well in identifying their scoring leaders. Kian Helgen led the first 10 minutes with six points, while Heman Addy and Slymark Defang contributed by cleaning up second-chance opportunities within the perimeter to keep the offensive flow going.
MHS V played to their strengths with Nolan Cultura and Carl Sanchez at the frontline, contributing five and seven points, respectively. Kenny Laquian later joined the fray with a three-pointer and two free throws, helping give their team a slight advantage heading into halftime, 29-25.
In the second half, both teams shifted their focus to defense.
SSHS V limited MHS V’s offensive production, with Jezpher Navarro sinking a clutch three-pointer to take the lead, 42-41. However, Laquian responded with a three-pointer of his own to seal the win for MHS V, 44-42.
Other games
Joining the winner’s circle were Saipan International School, which defeated Agape Christian School, 36-29, and Mount Carmel School, which outhustled Kagman High School V, 47-39.
