TEAM NMI got off to a strong start in their debut at the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup, defeating Vietnam 2-1 at the Bahrain Tennis Federation courts in Isa Town, Bahrain on Tuesday.
Maria Isabel Heras was up first for Team NMI. Although she gave a good fight, she could not overcome Vietnam’s Thi Nguyen, who won in two sets, 6-4, 7-5.
But Team NMI quickly recovered thanks to the skillful work of Carol Lee, who disposed of Vietnam’s Sophia Huynh, 6-0, 6-1, to even the match score, 1-1.
As a duo, Heras and Lee were a force to be reckoned with as they outlasted the pair of Huynh and Hanh Ngo, 6-4, in the first set, and triumphed in a thrilling tiebreak, 7(7)-(2)6, to secure Team NMI’s first match victory, 2-1.
Team NMI secured their second victory by dominating Brunei, 3-0.
In the first match, Heras reigned supreme over Brunei’s Danielle Lim, 6-1, 6-2, while Carol Lee outclassed Jia Tan in the second match, 6-0, 6-1. Heras and Lee’s first sets were highlighted by a 9-point run against their respective opponents.
For their part, the NMI’s Hye Jin Elliot and Asia Raulerson outclassed Brunei’s Eunice Lo and Areeesha Zain, 6-1, 6-2.
