Over 100 children attend 8th Annual Day and Sports Camp

DCCA Sports and Recreation Division Director Joe Lizama who was tasked prepare and maintain the facility for the event said the annual youth oriented activity looked successful as it started.

The Sports and Recreation put arranged the pavillon and put up tents for the participating children.

Some were accompanied by their parents from 8 a.m., to 11:30 a.m., some were just dropped at the venue.

The Day Camp started with arts and educational activities like coconut leaves weaving, sand painting, face painting and arts making out of recycled materials.

Most of the participants, Lizama observed, were excited about the sand and face paintings.

The Sports Camp that will follow in the next two weeks, Lizama said will give many children a chance to learn sports from other participants.

Lizama said many of those who attended the Day Camp and are likely to stay up to the Sports Camp are those who have been involved in the island’s different sports leagues.

Many of them are familiar figures in Little League majors division, some are from soccer, some tennis, basketball and some are young athletes.

The camp Lizama said will give these sports-minded children to share their talents to the other kids.

The Day and Sports Youth Camp, according to DYS volunteer coordinator Thelma Torres, is one of their means of promoting healthy families in the community.

She added that all the activities in the first week of the youth camp are part of their “education through arts.” The kids’ works she said will be displayed in Arts Council’s annual exhibit from August to September.

From July 22 to Aug. 1, the children will start with their sports activities, which include soccer, tee ball, track and field, volleyball, golf and basketball.

Parents still have the chance register their kids until July 11.

The drop off time for the kids at the Ada Gym will be at 7:30 a.m., and the pick up time will be at 11:30 a.m.

Parents are welcome to pack up snacks for their kids.

Children will be grouped according to age and will engage in variety of sports, leisure, health, fine arts and other fitness activities, all coed.
