Rengiil rules Sunday qualifier

MEI Rengiil avenged her only loss to dominate last Sunday’s qualifier at the USS Peleliu Club’s Veteran’s Day Customer Appreciation 8-ball Tournament.

Rengiil pushed Taylor Watanabe and John Mongami into the loser’s bracket before falling to Ron Chisato in the winner’s bracket final. Chisato forced her to settle for fourth place with two wins in their last meeting on Oct. 17.

Chisato opened with wins over Brenda Rideb and Annie Tesiro. Tesiro also defeated Erina Olkeriil. Watanabe eliminated Tesiro, but Olkeriil went on a run. She downed Rideb, then befuddled Mongami and Watanabe with bad position as she patiently pocketed her balls.

Rengiil stopped her streak at three and set up the rematch with Chisato in the championship. He started strong in the first game, but gave Rengiil an opening. She ran off six balls and the 8-ball.  Chisato had two chances at doing the same feat, but couldn’t pull it off.

Rengiil won $17.50 and a trophy from Pacific Amusement. There is a $5 entry fee for the Veteran’s Day qualifying tournaments. Half of the money goes to the winner, and the other half is added to the $100 first and $50 second place money put up by the USSP in the Nov. 11 final.

Rengiil’s win raised her total points to five, making her the third seed in the Veteran’s Day championship. Chisato is still the top seed, earning ten points from his second place finish. Mongami is second with six points. Simeon Kapileo and Patrick Cepeda have three, Olkeriil two, with a point apiece for Bill Kaipat and Watanabe.

Sign-up begins at 7:30pm for the Sunday qualifiers. Opponents are chosen by blind draw for the double-elimination tournament. Play follows Billiard Congress of America rules.
