Rollers 1 freeze Kagman Suns, inch over Kontenders in team standings

Rollers I showed some muscle against Suns, 91-59, in the Saipan Rotary club Youth Basketball League.

Rollers I now hold 3-2 win-lose card in the league, inching its way a notch higher than Kontenders, which carry a 3-3 win lose ticket.

The combined offense of Brandon Antonio and JR Concepcion of Rollers I proved too hot for the Suns to endure without committing some fouls along the way.

Antonio and Concepcion practically created a 22-point basket of an offense against the Suns crew, blowing away what little heat that they could muster in the hard court.

During the first period of play, Suns were able to respond to Rollers I’s barrage of shots, with Juan Maratita and some of the Suns players able to secure points and check against a possible wide deficit.

Maratita himself was able to throw two three-pointers beyond the arc in the beginning of the first quarter and second quarter.

However, several turnovers due to miscalculated pass and unmanned defense under the basket caused Suns to lose the game with a sorry score of 59 points in the final seconds.

Even though Suns’ Jimmy Brel came out to help fashion 10 points, his contribution became insignificant as his fellow Kagman cagers hurried to connect to the basket without precise offensive strategy and effective defense.

Rebound was another issue with Suns. As they failed to make shots, Rollers I readied under the basket to grab the ball on their side and go down their court to translate their rebounds into needed points.

Suns’ zone was left open on crucial junctures in the match, thereby allowing Rollers I squad to come in unmolested.

Manny Matagolai, one of the power forward of Rollers I who made 13 points, put in two three-point attempts to bring the match to higher level of play.

It seemed that Suns run out of fuel during the second period when they committed several turnovers because of unsuccessful ball passes in the latter minutes of the game.

On the other hand, Rollers I took very opportunity to connect to their court via fastbreaks.
