Shinzen begins countdown for 2011 University games

Marianas Variety learned yesterday that the torch is different from common torches to declare the start of sporting events. It is different because the rings forming the torch can be revolved to change shape, which means each torchbearer can have a unique Universade torch. The torch is to be ignited at Beijing University and passed through 30 college campuses on or before August 12, 2011.

2011’s games is themed “Tell the world,” the formal celebration was attended by about 30,000 people including country officials and leaders.

A neon clock over the stadium marked the start of the one-year countdown at 8 p.m. and a spectacular firework show followed with the audience cheering and waving light sticks.

For the preparation of next year’s games, a manual of frequently used English phrases that are to be used during the Games will be compiled in a booklet/guide with tips for pronunciation and understanding. Workers in public sectors such as taxi drivers, bus drivers, hotel and restaurant staff, and tour guides will receive English training to better suit the competitors that will be coming in from all parts of the world. Since English is a universal language English language training had already been provided for Nanshan District police concentrating on phrases related to police work. More than 200 English-speaking promotions had been conducted since January of this year attracting more than 30,000 citizens.

Since the games will be held in less than a year this should be enough time and a great opportunity for athletes in the NMI and neighboring islands who are interested in joining to start toning themselves and start raising money needed to fund the trip.
