The tournament consists of several mixed-doubles events, which include the 40-and-above, class A, class B, class C, and 18-and-under categories.
Saipan Badminton Club’s Joel Ortega and Kim Boranah easily wiped out Taga BC’s Laurence Camacho and Irish Pagarao, 21-15, 21-11 in last Saturday’s opening game. Saipan BC quickly notched its second win when Gary Bondoja and Oh In Sook defeated Alvin Alvarez and Emily Vargas in three sets (16-21, 21-6, 21-12).
In another match, Sam and Cris Obaldo of Shirley’s Badminton Club bested Lito Mendoza and Marylyn Montano, 21-11 in set one but fell short, 18-21 by set two. The Sam-Cris duo eventually triumphed, 21-13 in the third set.
Class B netters Joseph Santos and Elma Labuson downed Shirley’s BC’s Aries Cordero and Jaja Samonte, 21-17, 19-21, 21-12. Unlike them however, Glenn Bultje and Wendy Fernandez needed only two sets to crush the pair of Kanata Omo and Cristy Villaflor, 21-19, 21-10.
A late-game boost eventually saved Mario Diola and Julie Lee as both players swept Erik Pena and Babes Cielo, 21-17, 21-17 in their last two sets.
